Setting up a backyard sandpit for your child? You don't know how many kg of sand should be in it? Wondering how often to replace the material in order to maintain safe and hygienic playing conditions? We give you a hint in the article.
How much space is needed to play in the sandpit?
To ensure children's comfort, the sandpit should be the right size. This way, children will be able to play freely without bumping into or disturbing each other. On average, sandpits for the garden are 120 x 120 cm or 150 x 150 cm. The metre size is mainly used for two children or one child. If the product is ultimately to be used by a larger group of children, we recommend choosing a correspondingly larger model, such as 200 x 300 cm.
If you would like to add variety to your garden playground, you can choose a sandpit with a house. In this way, you will provide your child with additional attractions in the form of slides, swings or a game of 'tic-tac-toe'.
How much sand is needed for the sandpit?
As mentioned earlier, standard sandpits for the garden are generally 1.2 x 1.2 m or 1.5 x 1.5 m in size. The smaller sandbox usually holds 4 to 6 bags of sand of 25 kg each. This gives approximately 100/150 kg of sand. As for the larger variant, here approximately 6/9 bags of 25 kg are needed. This means that between 150 and 200 kg will be necessary.
How do you calculate the amount of sand?
If your sandpit has non-standard dimensions, you can calculate the requirements yourself. You will need a simple formula for this:V=L×S×G
Where:
V = quantity of sand
L = length of the sandbox
S = width of sandbox
G = depth of the sandpit
This will tell you the capacity of the sandbox. Note that you do not usually pour sand to the end of the sandpit, only the lower layer, so it is advisable to give a smaller value for the depth so that you do not buy too much sand.
How often to change the sand in the sandpit?
Children are not able to take care of proper hygiene on their own, which is why parents need to bear this in mind. Unfortunately, sandpits, especially public sandpits, are a place where children can acquire many diseases, such as Salmonella. This also applies to garden playgrounds if you have a pet that could poop in the sandpit. To keep your sandpit clean, change the sand at least once before and during the season. And also whenever it is found to be contaminated with animal faeces. To minimise the possibility of unwanted contamination, it is a good idea to keep your sandpit closed. Many sandboxes have a dedicated flap that can be used to cover the sand. You can also use a waterproof sheet to cover the sandpit.
